Rating: Summary: Best book I've read in a long time! Review: I picked this book up on a whim and am glad fate hooked me up with one of the best books I've read in ages. The character development is great, the relationships between and among the main cast are elucidated quite well, and best of all, the book made me really want to explore how I would have reacted in each of the characters roles. My husband never reads the same stuff I do, but I even hooked him on the book too (the courtroom drama was the initial sell). Neither he, nor I, could put the book down, and within a week, I had read this book, as well as two others by the author. Read this book - you'll be glad you did!
Rating: Summary: Passionate Review: I don't even know where to begin. I am so glad I was aimlessly walking through the library when this novel found me, and to think I was going to go home and watch tv! I opened this book in the morning and finished it that night. It took over my life for a number of days. I was in tears over it often, my feelings are incapable of being described. I grieved for the characters in this book as I grieved for deaths in my family, and longed to live where they did just so I'd have the right to cry for them. This book touched me in a way I have never experienced and I urge everyone everyone everyone to read it. You won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Excellent page turner Review: Wow, it was refreshing to read a book that dealt with real human emotion without throwing in an obligatory gay sexual interlude, an incestual episode, a wife-beating, or some form of contrived torture. Ms Picoult exhibits a clear and sensitive understanding of human nature in the narrative of this book. It is truly a study of the human psyche. I understand that this book has been given movie rights. I'll be looking forward to seeing it on 'the big screen'.
Rating: Summary: Help! I need a nail appointment! Review: ...I bit off all my best nails reading this book-- it's that suspenseful. All these 5-star reviews might make you suspicious that this author has a really big family. But I swear, I've never met her, just read the book on a recommendation. It was completely riveting. Suspenseful, painfully honest, thought-provoking. I was reminded somewhat of MIDWIVES by Chris Bohjalian and THE MOST WANTED by Jacqueline Mitchard, but I felt THE PACT was more suspenseful and better written. Not a "comfortable" read due to the subject matter, but a wonderful read. Believe all the passionate reviews here.
Rating: Summary: The best book I have ever read Review: This is such a touching novel; in my eyes it describes a teenage relationship so well. I could relate to Chris and Emily's feelings and I felt everything they were going through. A must read!
Rating: Summary: Possibly the best book I've ever read!! Review: When a friend lent this book to me I put off reading it for a couple weeks. Once I finally picked it up I couldn't put it down!! I read it in two days and couldn't think about anything else when I wasn't reading it. I was worried about how it would end, but it was WONDERFUL! I can't wait to read Jodi Picoult's other novels!! This book comes highly recommended...read it!
Rating: Summary: Wrenching Review: I read this book over one weekend. It gripped me from the start and I read it though without pause. A difficult book to read because I identified with so many of the emotions of all the characters. A book you won't forget.
Rating: Summary: No Character Is Perfect Review: In Jodi Picoult's novel, THE PACT, none of the characters are totally likeable - just like real life. From birth, Emily and Chris are pushed into a relationship by their parents and the reader is disturbed (at least I was!) The results are horrifying: deception, death, a trial. Picoult has a true talent for creating realistic characters. As involved readers we are horrified by the parents, we want to shake Chris out of his romanticized view of Emily, and we want Emily to open up and reach out to someone who can HELP her. This makes for some frustration because it IS all so real. As a mother of teenagers, I couldn't help but wonder what I would do if I ever found myself in these situations. In short, THE PACT is everything you want a novel to be! This page-turner was extremely thought-provoking, engrossing and well written. I'm off to get Picoult's other novels right now!
Rating: Summary: Simply wonderful book Review: This is the first book by Jodi Picoult I've ever read. I finished it in less than two days. I couldn't put this book down. It is immensely readable. I cannot say enough great things about this book. I loved the characterization, the feelings it evoked, etc.
Rating: Summary: A book to be savored and read again and again. Review: I walked into Coliseum Books in Manhattan and saw this book in the new paperback release section. Drawn to its beautiful cover, I picked it up, purchased it and began to read. I found this novel very moving and well written, with well developed characters that I felt close to. The relationship between Chris and Emily was captured perfectly. Although the story of the Harte's and the Gold's is a sad one, it is one that has stayed with me since having read it. If this novel is truly being considered for the big screen as stated in the author's biography, I can't wait to see it!!!
