Rating: Summary: Provocative of thought and emotion Review: Michael Savage writes a book which is based on fundamental conservatism yet his "in your face" rhetoric may stimulate many emotions. For those who are too offended to read through the provocative style, they are missing much. Savage takes a head-on approach to identifying problems and suggesting solutions. I believe that in general he identifies the issues of the day which need the most attention. No one can make an informed judgment about this book without reading it in its entirety. Even if one does not share the same views as Savage, certainly he can understand his sincere passion.
Rating: Summary: A little too Savage for my taste Review: Accept this up front: Savage's basic, conservative message will appeal to most conservatives. His punning and acerbic attacks antagonize liberals (count them easily among the one-star ratings) and even many conservatives (offering three or four stars). Not that a conservative would claim that Savage has it wrong, he just goes too far, yells too loud, rambles too long, and seems less concerned about readers accepting his creed than he cares about hammering home his point. Savage is clearly conservatively correct almost all of the time and never politically correct. He's right, the liberal agenda has not only crept into our lives, it has grabbed hold of too many of our institutions and much of our entertainment and cultural heritage. The problem is that Savage is savage. Savage is better-educated than most conservative talk show hosts and authors. That does not mean that he is an expert in politics. The liberal counterparts to Savage and his fellow conservative talk show hosts are relatively few and hard to categorize. And they don't sell many books. Savage reads more like Gordon Liddy, well over to the curmudgeonly side than to the compassionate end of the scale. Sean Hannity offers a more photogenic, glib analysis and less vitriol. Coulter is attractive, incisive, and does more and better if imperfect research. If all of these elements could be combined into a well-educated, experienced, attractive and more compassionate composite, I think we'd have a better talk show host, pundit and book author, not just a mealy-mouthed compromise. Savage offers one dimension for this uberhost and, sad to report, some of it is not pretty.
Rating: Summary: Very insightful and thought provoking Review: The book was a great read. Although I have never listened to his radio talk show, Michael Savage comes across as entertaining yet informative on the values and protection of values of our country. Together with Sean Hannity's book, I am enlightened on the conservative perspective. The primary point I enjoy about these books and its views are the principle of self-government and self-reliance. Regardless of one's view on liberalism or conservatism, we need to be responsible for our own actions and their consequences. My parents were immigrants from the Philippines. It has always been my belief that we have a government that is of the people, by the people, and for the people- rather than a government that is over the people.
Rating: Summary: I Expected Better Review: But then, I hadn't listened to his radio show. I'm a pretty conservative guy, so when my friends started telling me about this guy's book, I had to check it out. I was sadly disappointed. Michael 'Savage' (Here's some trivia for you. Try to find out what his REAL last name is.) is perhaps best left to the radio medium. I've tried watching his television show on MSNBC. Boring. For a guy who has a doctorate, he wrote a book I plowed through in two sittings. This is pretty simple fare. Know who to blame? It's the pot smoking liberal commie babies. You thought Horowitz was stuck on communism? Guess again, Savage is drowning in it. He attacks the usual culprits, the liberal interest groups and the upper echelons of the Democratic party. Frankly, if you're looking for substance, much less real style, check out Ann Coulter or the less acerbic Sean Hannity. It's not that I don't agree with alot of what he says, that makes me feel his book isn't worth the paper it's written on, really. I think his group's emphasis on American culture, stable borders, etc. are right on the mark. I just think that Rush Limbaugh would make a better spokesman for conservative impact on our society than this self-aggrandizing clown.
Rating: Summary: IT SOUNDS GOOD BUT NOOOOOOOOOO FACTS at all. Review: Educated people deserved educated FACTS. I whish he could prove and show who was the terrorist that pour poison on a girls food. (chapter on Immigration) and more... I believe Mr.Savage has an opinion a very strong opinion but he was not able to show the facts and could not back them up either. I do not completly dismiss what he says (10%) but that does not make the book a good book. IT makes it a bellow average book. Probably Lazy-Uneducated-People with a Fast-Food-Mentality will believe what he says with out questioning the facts. Not me.
Rating: Summary: Savage writing indeed Review: This book is sure to polarize, which is a shame because some of Mr. Savage's claims are right on the money. Overall, this is yet another example of commentary-lite. There are many "liberals are idiots just because" moments that add very little to the current political dialogue. However, there are a few times when Mr. Savage actually makes some sense. It is those moments that make this book a decent read. The theme is exactly what you would expect from this conservative talk-show host. Much of the argumentation is a re-hash of things we've already seen and read, with a dash of Mr. Savage's own personal style. The book actually struggles the most when Mr. Savage wanders into weak comparisons between what is wrong with the world and his childhood memories. However, the treatment of America's desire to medicate its children and the liberal take on religion in politics is sometimes fresh and usually interesting. Be prepared to sort the good stuff from the fluff.
Rating: Summary: "Buy, Love, and Cherish" this book Review: This book has about every topic covered and none is slanted towards a party line. Surely, the radio show sounds better having read Savage's book. Memorizing this book maybe a little too much to ask, but once you read it, you will be referring back to the book whenever you need to know about anything political or ethical. I only wish Savage would have added an index for easier reference and footnotes to the different sources he may have obtained. By the way, the title shares the same acronym (BLC) with Borders, Language, and Culture--I wonder if this will catch on.
Rating: Summary: Everyone Is A Savage:Even Those Who Agree With Him Review: Michael Savage has been a radio talk show host for several years. His core values are bedrock conservatism. He loudly rails against those elements of the United States most often associated with liberal left-wingers. His style is confrontational, insulting, and entertaining. His SAVAGE NATION reads like an extended printed version of THE BEST OF SAVAGE ON RADIO. If you have never heard Michael Savage on the air and then open this book, be prepared for a non-stop assault on liberalism. It is almost not to the point that Savage might have formulated his ideas in a more intellectual, less abrasive tone. Other conservative writers--Ann Coulter, who has much the same to say--have expressed their viewpoints in a way that is frankly less scary, and ultimately more convincing. As I read THE SAVAGE NATION,I wondered who the target audience was. If it were those who already agree with him, then this group might loudly approve the content even if quibbling about the strident tone. If it were those who had not yet made up their minds whether the United States is fast dropping down into an liberal Alice In Wonderland sewer, then the number of those who tend to agree with him would be a function of those who could separate the truths of his anti-liberalism from the harshness of his invective that lashes out at that same anti-liberalism. And if those who read THE SAVAGE NATION see themselves squarely aligned with left-wingism, then Savage's brute force tone is not likely to convince. Savage's essential plank is that this country has been threatened by a political correctness that has been running amuck ever since the hippie days of the 60s. He lashes out at pot, abortion, the ACLU, PETA, unchecked immigration, and pornography. His insults his opponents;his favorite epithet is 'moron.' He punningly alters names to put down: Pillory Clinton, Al Gorleone, Jesse Hijackson, just to name a few. He states that he gives a 'fact' and then does not provide footnotes, forcing the reader to take his word for it. The utter tragedy of Michael Savage is that he does not recognize the difference between the media of radio and that of books. That which makes for entertaining listening in the former instead results is dismissal in the latter. Most people prefer to read a book at their leisure so they can chew over its contents in an informed and deliberate manner. You may have thought from my review that I am one of those liberals whom Savage bashes. Actually, I agree with many of his points, and I am a regular listener to his radio show. Yet, I feel a sense of loss that the bombastic words of Michael Savage turned off rather than turned on a new generation of readers who have not yet learned how to differentiate style from substance.
Rating: Summary: Great Read Review: I really enjoyed this book. It certainly sheds light on many issues that the mainstream citizen lets slip through the cracks. Michael Savage seems to be a very intelligent and contraversial person. Much of what is said in the book describe my thoughts and fears. I couldn't put it down.
Rating: Summary: protection from vidal and mailer Review: after reading this book i realized that alot of the liberals out here would not appreciate this book very much and they would call it pure uncouth propaganda. In a certain sense this is, it is written for the true americans out here who realize all the problems that are going on in america and want to be able to do somethign about it. This man is controversial and i do not believe there is one opinion he says that the liberals will like. Even i do not agree with everything he says. In some ways he is to extreme for me but mostly everything he says makes since. However he is not right wing party man hypocrite because he will bash both parties ...he is informing america of the liberal media bias, the flooding of our country with aliens, the social decline of america and our families and all the other problems. ...i will tell you honestly mailer is more extreme then savage, he makes less sense then savage and he is alot less inteligant than savage. ... If you want a entertaining opinion from a independant party talk show host about all the things that are ruining america then you should buy this book. ...
